Dr. Bronner’s to Celebrate World Fair Trade Day in Singapore and More Than 10 Countries Around the World on May 13

Campaign Online and in Retail Stores to Educate Consumers on Business for Social Good During Month of May

April 20, 2017

SINGAPORE — On May 13, Dr. Bronner’s, family-owned maker of the top-selling natural brand of soap in North America, in partnership with its global network of distributors, will celebrate World Fair Trade Day in Australia, England, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Singapore, Switzerland, Taiwan and the United States. Through educational events, in-store demonstrations, promotions, product giveaways and social media campaigns, Dr. Bronner’s partners worldwide will use the retail space to inform and educate consumers about fair trade, and promote the importance of knowing how people all along the supply chain are treated, and how informed and ethical consumption choices can lead to better livelihoods for all. Dr. Bronner’s authorized distributor in Singapore, Nature’s Glory, is proud to be part of this meaningful event.

In Singapore, Dr. Bronner’s will have featured promotions throughout the month of May at participating retailers, including Nature’s Gory, in-store and through their e-shop; all NTUC Finest outlets; major Watson’s outlets; and selected health and wellness stores. The campaign will also promote Journey to Serendipol, an eight-minute documentary about Dr. Bronner’s Fair Trade and Organic Coconut Oil from Sri Lanka, now subtitled in German, French, Japanese, Korean, and Mandarin. “Buying fair trade products can make a difference to producers in developing countries. To them, getting a guaranteed fair price for their goods could mean being able to send their children to school, or putting them on the path out of poverty. Fair trade reduces poverty, encourages environmentally-friendly production methods, and safeguards humane working conditions,” says Peter Lim, President and CEO of Nature’s Glory Singapore. “We encourage ethics such as loving your neighbor as yourself and we believe in supporting those who reward their workers with fair wages, who take care of their workers, and those who take care of our health and the environment. By supporting Dr. Bronner’s, a globally trusted brand, you are supporting this dedicated fair trade vision and mission.”

Fair trade is a movement that empowers farmers to organize and earn a livelihood within the highly competitive global marketplace. Started by the World Fair Trade Organization, World Fair Trade Day began in 2001 to showcase the small-scale producers and farmers at the heart of the global fair trade movement and the contributions they make to healthy, sustainable communities around the world. For the last six years, Dr. Bronner’s has partnered with the organization Fair World Project to organize successful campaigns in retail stores in the United States to connect dedicated fair trade brands with consumers. This will be the first year Dr. Bronner’s celebrates World Fair Trade Day globally.

“My brother and I view our family company as a social engine that does business so we can do good,” says Michael Bronner, President of Dr. Bronner’s. “Sourcing fair trade ingredients allows us to maximize our positive impact, since the production of the coconut, palm, and olive oils we put in our soap helps to improve the livelihoods of the farmers, workers, and communities that produce them. As a global brand sold throughout North America, Europe, and Asia, we are excited to demonstrate our worldwide commitment to fair trade. This will be the first time our global sales and marketing network will mobilize and activate around one cause on the same day. For over 24 hours, around the world, we will demonstrate the power of global community and global business in support of fair trade.”

For Dr. Bronner’s, fair trade is key to ensuring a clean and ethical supply chain. The nearly 70-year-old family company sources its major raw materials from certified organic and fair trade projects around the world, including from Sri Lanka (coconut oil), Ghana (palm oil), Palestine and Israel (olive oil). Besides using fair trade ingredients, Dr. Bronner’s has a dedicated fair trade supply chain, which results in rewarding returns and job creation. In fact, participating brands in Fair World Project’s U.S. World Fair Trade Day program have reported sales growth of nearly 200 percent each year, demonstrating the increasing consumer demand for ethical products and fair trade brands.

“Consumer actions play a significant role in the big picture of trade,” says Dana Geffner, Executive Director of the Fair World Project. “More and more consumers are saying that it’s important to them to shop with their values, they just don’t necessarily know which brands to trust. Dr. Bronner’s models what it means to be a dedicated fair trade brand. Part of the importance of celebrating World Fair Trade Day is to help retailers meet consumer need, while highlighting and supporting companies who are doing good work in their supply chains.”

“Look for the fair trade label on products when you shop next time. The fair trade label provides assurance that farmers and other producers adhere to fair trade standards. Ingredients from these supply chains are audited to ensure fair trade standards. Ingredients from these supply chains are audited to ensure fair trade prices have been paid and that workers on fair trade farms enjoy freedom of association, safe working conditions and sustainable wages. Forced child and slave labor are strictly prohibited. This is something to celebrate,” says Chris Lim, Director of Research and Marketing for Nature’s Glory. “We can all make a real difference with fair trade as it brings social justice and environmental sustainability.”
